Back in the late 1960's we used to dream about how to design a system so that a light would go on, to warn you that you no longer had power. Today, there are so many ways of storing electrical power that such lights are routine. But I still find it disconcerting when I recharge my cell phone and its display says:
Recharging ... power is off.
Recharging ... power is off.

I think the Kindle (not the new ones, the e-ink ones) are really cool in this regard. Since no power is required to maintain a given screen of text, it puts up a 'battery is depleted, please recharge' page when the power's about to go. I absolutely LOVE the idea of screens or indicators that don't require an active power source to convey information.
